Jessica’s Sunroom – Heritage Meets Horticulture

Jessica, a Virginia homeowner, wanted a Victorian glasshouse. She needed a space for her plants. The climate was a challenge. Summers are humid. Winters bring frost.

She wanted a structure that matched her historic home. No generic aluminum lean-to. No polycarbonate box. She wanted elegance that lasts.

The Design

We chose the Victorian style. It features bold silhouettes and ornate details. The frame is all-metal. The geometry serves as ornamentation. Diamond grids top the gable ends.

The footprint is 80 square meters. It fits growing areas and a seating space. The raised concrete base resists ground movement. It also looks rooted in the earth.

Materials

The frame is heavy-gauge aluminum. It has a matte black finish. Aluminum won’t rust. It doesn’t need repainting. It handles wind and snow loads.

The glazing is double-paned. Low-emissivity glass reduces glare. UV transmission is blocked. The black muntins split the glass into smaller panes.

The Roof

The roof is pitched and steep. It sheds rain easily. A central gable extends forward. A decorative finial sits at the peak.

Operable skylights run along the ridge. Louvered side windows provide fresh air. Hot air rises and escapes. Cooler air is drawn in. No electricity is needed.

The Entry

Double doors create a symmetrical front. Tall side windows flank the doors. When open, the greenhouse extends into the garden. The line between indoors and out is blurred.

Challenges

The soil was clay-heavy. It shifts with moisture. We dug deeper footings than planned. The driveway was narrow. Trees had to be preserved. Materials were carried in by hand.

Rain delayed the foundation work. We updated Jessica weekly. She valued the transparency.

The Reveal

Jessica walked through on a spring afternoon. Sunlight filled the room. The black frame seemed to disappear. The garden took center stage.

She placed a lemon tree in one corner. A seating area went to the opposite side. She said the greenhouse exceeded her expectations. The ventilation worked so well she didn’t need backup cooling. Neighbors asked who built it.

Project Summary

Type: Victorian glasshouse. Location: Virginia, USA. Area: 80 sq m. Frame: Aluminum, matte black. Glazing: Double-paned, low-E tempered glass. Foundation: Reinforced concrete. Roof: Pitched with ridge vents. Entry: Double doors with side windows. Timeline: 14 weeks.

A Lasting Addition

Jessica now grows plants she couldn’t before. She uses the greenhouse all winter. The space is warm and green. The garden outside is dormant.

This project is personal and authentic. The Victorian style gave us a rich language. The metal frame gave us strength. Jessica’s vision gave us direction.

A greenhouse is more than materials. It is a way of living. Light, growth, and nature matter. We are honored to build that for Jessica.
